“I’d never really considered myself as an artist before, let alone one who could make a business out of it, but a friend recommended speaking to The Prince’s Trust, and that got me thinking about the commercial potential of my work.” Onome joined the Enterprise programme, which helps young people looking for self-employment to explore and test their ideas, and to start their own business.

Onome Otite is an illustrative textile artist who uses a variety of self-taught techniques to create her artworks. She has built her business in just a few years thanks to the support of the Cockpit Arts | The Prince’s Trust Creative Careers Programme, which she joined in 2016. She has won several newcomer awards, exhibited her work in central London and recently designed the front cover for style bible Estila magazine.

My starting point for this volume was the cover collaboration we did with collagist and artist, Onome Otite. I came across Onome during the Cockpit Arts open days when I had the opportunity to see her work close up and we also talked about her creative process. I love how she uses fabrics – how she mixes textures and patten, and manipulates the materials in her work. I’m so pleased how the cover has been received so far. She is such a talented lady.

Her figurative illustrations using textiles and printed materials started life in her living room, and she admits that pre-Cockpit she would never have considered a shared studio. “But actually… you get so much more out of it. You see more, you share more ideas… You learn a lot, whether that’s a new technical skill or about a show, stockist or supplier.” The transferral of knowledge has come full circle now in the large, airy studio she shares.

The Progress 1000 - 2017
The power of the smile was much in evidence at the culmination of the Progress 1000 campaign event celebrating London’s Most Influential People at Tate Modern. The event was attended by Invisalign ambassadors Saira Khan and Andy Friedlander, as well as by two up-and-coming entrepreneurs – Onome Otite and Dr Rob McInerney who are part of Invisalign`s mentoring programme.
